{Supplier Love} Devnaa's Yum Confectionary

Midweek, we are closer to the weekend then we were a few days ago... obv! Anyway, something that will make us crave that 4 O'clock tea break - I would like to warmly welcome to Shaadi-Esque a fantastic confectionary company, who specialise in sweets and desserts by combining the authentic Indian recipes with artisan chocolate techniques. Owners of Devnaa, Jay and Roopa, brother and sister, develop Indian inspired chocolates and treats for all occasions.

A little bit about the Brother and Sister duo: "My name is Jay Rawal and together with my sister Roopa we are the founding partners of Devnaa. The journey for us began at our kitchen table with relatives and friends praising Roopa’s home made Indian desserts, in particular the chocolate barfi (pronounced ber-fee, which is a modern twist on a traditional Indian sweet). Roopa’s knowledge of authentic Indian cooking has been learned from our Mum’s superb recipes and also from our Grandmother’s guidelines. Our grandmother was famous amongst her local community in Nairobi for making the best Indian sweets!"

Jay and Roopa have developed their business around their family heritage, and it is felt in their business today, through the way they approach customers, recipes and packaging. Ultimately the two have created a bespoke product for the Asian Market and I cannot wait to share their wonderful treats with some of my family and friends, especially the chocolate barfi - which is my fav!!!!

"For us the term ‘second best’ has never been an option, if something is not quite right we go back to the drawing board and find a way to make it right, we probably inherited these values from our grandfather who was such a perfectionist, his tailor made suits were the envy of all his friends! We believe in making our creations using traditional techniques and carefully selected ingredients like the finest Belgian chocolate couvertures used in our barfi and truffles or the freshly ground spices used in our bars. Roopa still uses our grandmother’s mortar and pestle to crush the spices used to develop our recipes."

Devnaa's little selections of heaven make a great present, even wedding favour. Giving you guests these sweet little boxes full of deliciousness is all they could want to go home with - if they don't munch them down before they leave, that is!

"We like to think of each one of our creations as an irresistible masterpiece, made with the same love and dedication as the inspiring sweet makers in India and as a tasty treat that would make our family proud."

We hope you have really enjoyed Devnaa's sweet confectionaries, they make amazing gifts, favours and with Valentines coming up, you must check out their Valentines collection today. Time is running out!

We love Devnaa's idea, their concept, their wonderful take on the Indian Barfi and the modern chocolate jazz. I thoroughly recommend them on their service and their extreme finesse. Get in touch with them today for your wedding or gift requirements.

{Inspiration} Purrty in Pink Chic Inspiration Board

Just something sweet and cute this morning. This pink inspiration board is just so delicious - its mouth watering.

There are so many shades of pink, that you can really have an entirely pink wedding and it wouldn't look over the top what so ever! This is probably the best thing about colours - you can only have excess of one colour if you are using the same tone throughout. By mixing any colour with so many degrees of white, you will get the many lighter shades which can make up this pantone wedding of pinkness.

I shan't say any more - this one is just to glare at.

{Tips & Tricks} Choosing a Jay Dhokia Kind of Photographer ...

On the blog today is a very close friend of mine, the wonderful and talented photographer Jay Dhokia, who has an eye for storytelling and detail alike. Talking today Jay tells us all about choosing the Jay Dhokia of Photographers.

Choosing a photographer for your big day is an investment, a level of trust and someone who is able to create your memories for you.

There are many photographers out there, the choice is never ending and it is important you make the right decision.

Photographers are artists, they visualise what they see with their eyes and express through the camera. The end product being the photo that is produced. You will find many photographers who are traditionalists and will take the "safe" pictures so couples expectations will be met. A style for photography used nowadays is photojournalism. This style captures the day as it happens. A style that is adopted by Jay Dhokia. A style that over exceeds expectations.

"With my style of photography, it is important to capture the memories as the day happens and show the newlyweds the visual story when they are back from their honeymoon!"

Jay Dhokia captures the details surrounding the wedding, from the table decor, to the hysteria and emotions between guests. Parts of the day the couple would naturally miss. Photographers can at times be intrusive to the ceremony and try to dictate the wedding as the day progresses. This may not suit everyone but many of the traditional photographers still carry this habit, so be aware and set your expectations from the beginning.

"The only time I involve myself with pictures and direct is when there are group shots to be taken with positioning. I don't believe in being involved in the ceremony, I would rather be in stealth mode and do what I do best. Take everlasting photos!"

Complete wedding packages start from £1200, and digital packages start from £800.

For more information on Jay's photography packages, or to arrange a consultation you can contact him on 07765520052 or email him at smile@jaydhokia.com.

Thank you so much Jay for sharing your wonderful images and taking the time out for your expertise!

Leaving you inspired now - so have a phenomenal week ahead!

{Inspiration Board} Chinese New Year for the Chic, Glamorous and The Ultra Quirky

Being The Chinese New Year and in true Oriental fashion this blog post is all about red tones and fusion oriental design.

Just below in the first inspiration board, we explore some creative crafty ideas with a pretty dessert table, a fusion bridal gown and a super classic wedding cake to tone this inspiration board and really class it up a bit. You may notice this inspiration board is a toned down version of a classic Asian/Oriental inspired theme, namely for its base tone is white. Traditionally the base colour will be red and the sub tones will all be gold or deeper reds etc. The white makes it all very clear cut - clean and that bit more chic.

The high heels are the finishing touches to this simple chic wedding theme, as all inspiration boards need that little spunky character that adds dimension.

This I would absolutely label the Glamour inspiration board, purely because everything from the number of layers in the cake, to the slim, figure extenuating gown to the Fab bouquets that are not in the slightest going to over rule the attention of the dress - all are components of what makes up a glamorous look.

When I say glamorous, I really mean to say highly adorned - classic yet absolutely stunning. I do not mean to say Over the Top, Trying too hard or not making the right statement.  This inspiration board is just simple but elaborate, for example the dress is elaborate but the detail is simple, the cake slices are elaborate but the icing is simple, the richness of colour of the bouquets are elaborate, but the design is simple. All these components make up a fabulous wedding sleek wedding that doesn't try too hard. (I reeeeeeeeeally hope that makes sense.)

This is by far my favourite. Its a retro, Ultra quirky wedding inspiration fun. From the cute little car, to the converses to the tea set. All unbelievably different and really a unique style. And that is all I will say on the matter!

I hope you all love these remarkable red inspired, inspiration boards. They is something here for everyone, the Chic, the Glamour hungry to the ultra quirky. All inspired by the Chinese New Year and The Year of the Dragon.

Keeping you Inspired!

{Q&A} Ask the Wedding Experts

Q: I am having trouble with trusting my suppliers. I think I am being sold false promises.

A: I completely understand how you feel, delving into wedding planning for the first time can be a daunting experience especially when immense amounts of money is at stake, not to mention it being one of the single most prominent days in your life. There are some awful suppliers who do not enjoy or have the passion as others do - but do not be completely harsh as there are many more people within this industry who have the drive for weddings and your perfect day.

Here are a few pointers I have told my past brides:
1. Don't feel obligated to book there and then, anyone can talk the talk and sell you anything, check out their work, visit some of their upcoming weddings (permission must be sought) and go through their references. It's alright to not trust those who you are instilling your most precious day with.

2. Trust your first instinct - it's usually right. If something feels right and everything checks out and even better if they are recommended by another bride or supplier - then you should trust your instincts. If something however feels dodgy then walk away. That glimpse of hesitation could grow through the months until your wedding - 'are they going to screw up my wedding day?'

3. Shop around! It's ok to shop around, there is a supplier out there who sees your vision and who you just click with! It's your job to find that company or individual.

4. Be very cautious when following magazine recommendations. I have recently found out that actually some of their articles are for their sponsors. So their sponsors pay them to write compelling articles that reflect a brides desire to get in touch with them. This isn't always the case but it is worth considering! I suppose that is why blogs are a great inspiration source full of free speech and uninfluenced by money and sponsors. (Rant over)

Out there is a supplier who will be able to get you and understand your needs and wants. It's important to not sign anything until you are absolutely satisfied!

I hope this helps Shaadi-Esque reader and thank you for writing in.

A touch of gold, heaven is not just a dream

Dare I say that this is one of my all time favourite wedding inspiration boards! It is like something out of 'Fortnum and Mason's' Window Displays. Could it be described as Godly? I would say it is a close second. The colours, the styling, the elegantly designed table layout are all symbols of class and (what is a stronger word for beautiful?) - Finesse?!!

If you are a bride, print this inspiration board out, save the image on your computer, keep it in your minds, for this is the winning bridal theme of 2012! Yep - I said it!  2012! Perhaps that is a little ambitious, seeing as we are still in the first week of January.

The Hindu Ceremony - Head to toe

Planning your wedding ceremony and have no idea where to start? Fear not, Shaadi-Esque is here to assist! Just remember that each family has their own rituals they include  and some they exclude, some of those in this post are very traditional and are celebrated in India, whereas British Hindu equivalents are less extreme. However you can choose to dress your wedding up or dress it down, but to stay on the safe side, its **best to ask an elder**

Hindu wedding ceremonies, much like that of Sikhism and other Indian rituals are long and can last for days if not weeks. If you scroll down this post, you will truly appreciate how many and how long Hindu wedding ceremonies are. The wedding itself is held on one day, however the days leading up to the big day are filled with rituals and cultural metaphors. They may seem tiresome, but when you understand the deeper meaning beneath each ceremony, you will understand and have a greater appreciation for the many sacrifices.

Source

To begin there is the most exciting …

Engagement or Ring ceremony ('Misri') – this is when then wedding rings are exchanged, the couple welcome one another with garlands and the families exchange sweets and gifts. The engagement like many is rounded off with a dinner for friends and close family.

The Mendhi Party – This is a great reason for the Bride’s family to get dressed up and have henna painted on their hands and feet. The henna is for the Bride, her close female family and friends. There are songs and occasionally dancing to celebrate the festivities. Mendhi signifies the strength of a bond in a marriage so brides try to leave the Mendhi on for longer to ensure it darkens nicely! Mendhi parties are often celebrated in a hall or at home, food is usually served.

Source

Raas Garba (Sangeet Party)
Most families celebrate the Sangeet party as a much larger affair, this can be as a separate or joint event for the two new ajoining families. There is an opportunity to primarily sing songs as well as have a feast and dance as it is a party. For Gujaratis, Raas Garba is a favoured alternative, usually held in a hall and a traditional dance, Garba and Dandia Raas is performed. A light supper usually concludes the Raas Garba.

Thr Ghari Puja
This religious ceremony takes place the night before the wedding day in both the bride and the groom’s houses. A priest will be called to perform prayers with a few props, these include rice, coconut, wheat grains, oil, betel nuts and turmeric. During this event, the female relatives and close friends dress up in all of their finest clothes and jewellery. They hold ceramic pots of water on their head and plant a small stalk in their garden in celebration of the marriage. Nowadays, the Ghari Puja is often combined with the cleansing ceremony (Pithi) during which the bride and bridegroom are pasted with turmeric powder in a beautification process.

The Wedding Ceremony:

The wedding day begins with a fast for the bride and the groom. The groom will leave his house alongside his best man and a younger female relative whose job it is to keep the groom awake by shaking a metal pot filled with a few. “The history behind this curious custom is that weddings in India were traditionally held in the evening at which time many a groom might succumb to slumber!”

On departing his house, his younger female members will stop him and demand a "gift" in exchange for allowing him to leave for his wedding ceremony.

The wedding ceremony will take place in a Mandap, which is the four poled which performs a similar purpose to an alter. There is a fire which is sacred on the stage in the Mandap which “symbolises not only the illumination of the mind, knowledge and happiness but is also a clean and pure witness to the ceremony as it progresses.”

The ceremony is performed by the bride, the groom and their parents and close relatives through a set of rituals. The priest will chant "mantras" from the Vedas that were originally written in Sanskrit. He will also use the following props in his ceremonies .. Fresh flowers - to signify beauty; Coconut - to signify fertility; Rice, jaggery and other grains - to signify the food necessary for sustenance of human life; Ghee (purified butter) - to feed the sacred fire; Kumkum (vermilion) - red powder used for marking the forehead to signify good luck and to say that your soul (husband) is with you.

The breakdown of the HINDU WEDDING DAY CEREMONY:

Ganesh Puja
This starts the wedding day off with a prayer which asks Lord Ganesh to chase away any evils and to promote a successful and peaceful completion of the ceremony.

Grah Shanti (Worship to the Nine Planets)
This is a prayer to the nine planets of our Solar system. The effect of the nine planets is meant to be the most reflective. During this puja the Gods associated with these planets are asked to instil courage, peace of mind and inner strength to the bride and groom to help them tolerate life's sufferings.

The Welcome (Parchan)
The bride's mother will welcome the groom with garlands and she then walks him to the mandap. The father of the bride washes the right foot of the bridegroom with milk and honey. After this, a white sheet is held up to prevent the groom from seeing the bride on her arrival.

Arrival of the Bride
This can be as elaborate or simple as you wish. The bride can be carried in a small carriage into the mandap or she can be escorted by her very close uncle followed by the brides female cousins and friends.

Kanyadaan (Entrusting of the Daughter)
The parents consent is given before the wedding is allowed to proceed. The bride's parents at this point will hand their daughter to the groom by putting the bride's right hand into the grooms right hand. (Hastamelap, joining of hands) while reciting a sacred verse. The sheet or curtain separating the bride and groom is now lowered and the couple exchange flower garlands. The elders of the house place an auspicious white cotton string around the couple's shoulder's to protect them from the evil influences.  This represents the couple's bond. The bride and groom join hands and say their vows to love and protect one another.

Ganthibandhan (tying the knot)
The priest ties the wedding knot as a symbol of the permanent union between the bride and groom as husband and wife.

Source

Agni Puja (evocation of the holy fire)
The remainder of the wedding ceremony is performed around a fire which is set up by the priest in what is usually a copper bowl. Agni (fire) is the mouth of Vishnu and symbolises the illumination of mind, knowledge and happiness.

Shilarohana (stepping on the stone)
This ritual is to represent strength in the coming troubles the couple will face together. The bride will be expected to place her right foot on the stone – this stone is a symbol of their home.
Laja homa (putting parched rice into the sacred fire)
Three obligations are offered to the sacred fire. The brother of the bride puts into the bride's hand parched rice, half of which slips into the bridegroom's hand. Mantras are chanted. The bride prays to Yama, the God of Death, that he grant long life, health, happiness and prosperity to the bridegroom.

Mangalfera (walking around the fire)
The couple will make four rounds of the fire, after each individual round they will pause and touch their feel. This resembles the hindrances in their life that they will overcome together. Everything in these many ritual and ceremonies have a distinctive meaning and in their own way protect the couple from evil and hurt. Each of these four rounds have their own true symbol: Dharma – righteousness, Artha – monetary, accomplishment, Kama - energy and passion in life, Moksha - liberation from everything in life. The Groom will lead on the first three rounds which symbolically refers to his promise to attain righteousness, monetary aid, and energy and passion. The bride however signifies the liberation and will lead the final round.

Saptapadi (seven steps)
It is said in Hindu philosophy that if two people walk seven steps together then they will remain lifelong friends. The couple will exchange their vows at the start of each round and at the end the bride’s palms are generously overloaded with rice by her brothers to represent prosperity and wealth. A translation of the seven steps are below:

1.Let us take the first step to provide for our household, keeping a pure diet and avoiding those things that might harm us.

2. Let us take the second step to develop our physical, mental and spiritual powers.

3. Let us take our third step to increase our wealth by righteous and proper means.

4. Let us take out fourth step to acquire knowledge, happiness and harmony by mutual love, respect and trust.

5. Let us take the fifth step so that we may be blessed with strong, virtuous and heroic children.

6. Let us take the sixth step for self-restraint and longevity.

7. Let us take the seventh step to be true companions and remain life-long partners by this wedlock.

Saubhagya Chinha (blessing the bride)
The bridegroom blesses the bride by putting kumkum or sindhur (vermilion powder) at the parting of her hair (or on her forehead) and by giving her a sacred necklace (Mangal Sutra). The Mangal Sutra represents the couple's togetherness, love and sacred union.

Haridaya-Sparsha (touching of hearts)
The bride and bridegroom touch each other's heart reciting promises to each other.

Chathurthi Karma
The bride and groom feed each other four times for nourishment of the bone, muscle, skin and soul.

Aashirvaad (blessings)
The priest blesses the bride and groom. Confetti in the form of petals and rice are thrown on the couple for blessings. The wedding guests can then give their individuals blessings to the bride and groom and once completed, the marriage ceremony ends. Guests are invited to enjoy a sumptuous meal with the newlyweds.

Viddai (Bride's departure)
The farewell to the bride by her family and friends is always very tearful. She will start her new life with her husband and his family.

Source

Pilucinchuanu
Just before the departure of the wedding car from the Hindu temple, the priest will place a coconut under the front wheel of the car; this is then broken by the car as it drives over it. I have recently seen this performed by a horse and carriage. The significance of this in the good old days was that the breaking of the coconut was to ensure the car was safe for the newly wed couple.

The pilucinchuanu is the last of the ceremonies for the wedding..

I hope you have found this post informative and useful whether you are researching or planning for your big day. Either way I wish you the very best and a prosperous 2012 in doing so.

{Wedding Feature} Beyoncé - Best Thing I Never Had

Last night, I was sitting in a café with a dear friend of mine, and Beyoncé's Best thing I never had played on the plasma. We both watched the video and my friend asked me whether I had blogged about this video because of all the wonderful wedding and bridal dresses in it. I replied, 'NO! But that's a brilliant idea - better late than never!' So here goes, if you haven't done so already, have a look at the video is really does have some magnificent wedding designs and Beyoncé herself looks stunning and radiant.

At the start of the video Beyoncé wears sexy white lingerie by Agent Provocateur, she then slips into a strapless ballgown with an embroidered and embellished bodice by, we’re told, the boutique Baracci Beverly Hills. For the reception, she wore a dress she could dance in, an ivory Vera Wang V-neck style. Beyoncé keeps a double bun, throughout the wedding ceremony and lets her hair out at the reception to coordinate with the relaxed style of her Vera Wang dress.

You just can't fault Beyoncé for anything in this video!

Hair, Beauty & Make up Diary: The run up to the big day

Kaya from Kaya Hair and Beauty give us a count down to what to expect starting from one year ago until the big day. What you should be doing, what you need to be prepared for, and what is to come. Stay on track of the game!!

Research make-up artists and hair stylists that are in a practicable travelling distance to you. If they have a website check out their photo galleries of their previous bridal work. Get recommendations from friends of bridal make-up artists and hairstylists who they know does great work – keeping in mind the theme of your wedding.

Once you have shortlisted the make-up artists and hair stylists you would like to have for your big day, you need to find out which one(s) are available for the date of your wedding, if they are able to travel to your location for you to get ready and if there would be additional charges for travel and if so – how much. Once you have decided which one you would like to book with – don’t delay! Well saught after hair stylists and make-up artists get booked up fairly quickly and you don’t want to miss out by booking it last minute. Also book your trial at this time too. Trials are not always practically possible. The artist may live too far away from you to travel for a trial or she may not be available when you are, but, having a trial are recommended as it allows you, the bride, to communicate your wants, needs and any concerns you may have - but most of all to ensure you are confident and look amazing for your special day. So make sure this is booked in advance too (roughly 8-12 weeks prior to the wedding day).

If you are having a trial it should be done around this time as it allows enough time for changes to made if required and another trial to be booked if you feel it is necessary. It is totally up to the bride if she wants her bridesmaids, maid of honour and or/ mother of the bride to have a trial too, but, it is not completely necessary. Your make-up artist & hair stylist at the trial will consult with you over the looks you would like for the big day – this is the time for you to show her any images you have collected from magazines or have printed from websites, talk about the theme of the wedding, colour schemes, concerns you may have about allergies etc, accessory pieces you may want to wear in your hair and bring these to the trial to try them with the different looks. They will then trial a few different looks for you based on the information you have given to her already to see which one you prefer. You could also ask to take photographs of the different looks being trialed so you can look over them in the next coming weeks to help you decide which look you would like to go for if you are still undecided.

Start a skin and facial routine in order to best prepare your skin for the big day. By drinking plenty of water, having a daily facial cleansing routine and treating yourself to a pre-wedding luxury facial will ensure your skin is glowing, blemish and pimple free so when your make-up is applied you look absoloutely radiant.

Treat your hair to protein treatment. This will have your hair looking healthier, stronger and feeling softer than ever, giving your hair a youthful look. Something every bride is sure to love.

If you are an asian bride and are having a traditional asian wedding the bridal mehndi will need to be applied the day before the ceremony to allow the full colour to come out to show of the intricate patterns.

The time has come and it is your special day. Your skin is glowing and you can be rest assured that your artists will turn up on the day on time and replicate your desires for your hair and make-up on the day just as discussed from your trial and your consultation(s). This is the time for you to be relaxed and stress-free and ready to enjoy the day (and night) ahead.
